We quarry and fabricate two very unique Schist stones:
- The Ashfield Schist, silver/charcoal in color, is metamorphisised ancient seabed with two distinct layers. QUICKSILVER is a lighter, Quartzite layer with marbled garnet patterns, trace silver blazes and occasional quartz veining. GALAXY is a darker Schist layer that mirrors the woven surface texture in a holographic pattern. Expect blends of both patterns.
- The Crowsfoot Schist is a rare and variegated stone. This 600 million-year-old stone is found only here in a small site in Massachusetts and in an equally small location in Venezuela. It has a field of opalescent teal green or sea gray with varying sized bundles of black hornblende crystals, white feldspar, quartz and occasional cherry wood colored garnets.

SATIN FINISH – Available for Ashfield Schist & Crowsfoot Schist
Our satin finish is a lovely luminous matte surface, smooth but not reflective achieved by sanding with diamond pads up to 400 grit. We recommend this surface for most flooring applications. It is also fine for hearths, fireplace surrounds, countertops, vanity tops, benches, wainscoting and more.

POLISHED FINISH – Available for Ashfield Schist & Crowsfoot Schist
Our polished finish is an understated, reflective surface achieved by sanding with diamond pads up to 3000 grit. Applications include countertops, vanities, tables, wainscoting, custom hewn sinks and more.

SCORED PITCHED – Available in Ashfield Schist Only
We offer a scored pitched finish made by taking sawn slabs, scoring them at regular intervals and then chipping away the sawn surface to reveal the natural cleft interior of the slab. This is a beautiful look for wall panels, behind wood stoves, interior water features and more applications that we haven’t thought of yet.

NATURAL CLEFT – Available in Ashfield Schist Only
Achieved by splitting the stone along its cleave with a hammer and chisel, the natural surface texture of the Ashfield Schist is a wonderful, directional, corduroy weave dictated by the grain of the stone. With a pleasing, naturally slip resistant texture to walk on, the stone makes great walkways and patios. It is also available for indoor use in limited applications. Call for details.

Thicknesses offered are 1-1/4" (typical counter thickness), ¾" (for hearths, backsplashes, fireplace surrounds, etc.) and ½" (tile). Other thicknesses are negotiable.
